Sketchy madness
Disney approached us to create a retail pop-up concept for the Toy Story 30th Anniversary to rekindle the joy of this franchise through immersive storytelling and engagement.
The goal was to create a space that offered moments of surprise and impact - leaving a lasting memory for visitors.
We wanted to develop a vibrant and engaging pop-up concept to celebrate 30 years of Toy Story by transporting its iconic universe into an immersive physical space. We aimed for spaces that would feel exciting and drive social media engagement, with endless photo opportunities.
Our team brought key story moments and beloved characters to life so that we were able to engage both new and long-time fans. By maintaining the films’ recognisable style, we built a cohesive material palette, designed functional furniture displays and created interactive elements to make the spaces have maximum impact.
We utilised a Pop-up box style design with characters appearing from the edges of store windows, in a playful and engaging way. These spaces invited customers into a surreal, immersive Toy Story experience, drawn straight from scenes from the beloved films.
Our reference points for designing spaces were rich with playful details, and iconic characters so there was a wealth of inspiration to work with.
Replicating elements of Andy’s bedroom, and his toy chest, provided instantly recognisable moments for the retail facades and pop-up spaces to grab customer’s attention and pique their interest to explore further.
Other highlights included spaces based on Woody’s Wild West scenery, with Canyon inspired backdrops, featuring floor units with cutouts of Cactus designs adorned with Sheriff Badges.
Cash Decks created out of detailed cardboard box style units, complete with tape and address labels added to the authenticity of the space.
Customer engagement was a priority for this pop-up design, and so we created multiple photo opportunities.
Cut outs of Hamm and Buzz’s space rocket formed engagement opportunities; larger than life replica characters were dotted throughout spaces for customers to take photographs and engage with; and bespoke retail units referenced scenes from the films such as the alien claw machine.
Our designs worked brilliantly on their own, as impactful retail spaces, but more importantly they also evoked a warm response from consumers.
Our concept brought brand characters and narratives to life by playing with scale, creating spatial designs loaded with character references and adding in texture and detail that were evocative of the movies.
Larger than life designs and playful experiences truly celebrated the Toy Story films for their 30th Anniversary - the iconic characters and memorable scenes all brought to life through in depth storytelling.
